Most of the time, a squeaky stair isn't a sign of a major problem, it's just physics at work. Your staircase is made of many wooden parts: the treads (what you step on), the risers (the vertical part), and the stringers (the side supports). Over time, as your house settles and the wood expands and contracts with humidity changes, tiny gaps can form. When you step on a tread, it can rub against a riser or a stringer, and that's the squeak you hear. It's simply wood-on-wood friction.
My approach is straightforward and effective. First, I'll take a look and listen to figure out exactly where the noise is coming from. Every staircase is a little different. The solution is all about stopping the movement that causes the friction. Depending on your staircase and whether I can get access from underneath (like from a basement), the fix might involve a few different techniques.
This could mean securing the treads and risers together with special counter-sinking screws that won't be seen, or applying a strong construction adhesive into the gaps to create a solid, silent bond. The goal is always to make the parts of your staircase act as a single, solid unit again. It's a permanent fix that gets right to the root of the problem, not just a temporary patch.
Fixing those squeaks does more than just bring peace and quiet back to your home. It also makes your staircase feel much more stable and secure. You'll notice the difference right away—a solid feel with every step. There’s no need to put up with a noisy staircase any longer.
