A staircase is a complex wooden structure. Squeaks are almost always caused by friction between two components that have loosened over time. The main culprits are the treads (the part you step on), the risers (the vertical part), and the stringers (the angled frame that supports everything). As your house settles and wood responds to indoor humidity changes, gaps can form. When you step on a tread, it moves slightly and rubs against a riser or a nail, creating that all-too-familiar noise.
Simply squirting some lubricant into a gap won't solve the problem long-term. A proper, lasting repair requires a more detailed approach. First, I carefully walk the entire staircase to identify every single noise. I listen and feel for movement to pinpoint the exact location of the friction on each step.
Next, I determine the best way to secure the loose components. For most indoor stairs, this can be done discreetly from the top. I use specialized trim-head screws that can be driven through the tread into the riser or stringer below, pulling them tightly together. The screw heads are tiny and can be filled with a matching wood putty, making the repair nearly invisible. In other cases, applying a strong construction adhesive into the problem joint from behind (if accessible) creates a powerful, flexible bond that stops movement and noise permanently. It's a careful process, and every step is taken to protect your existing flooring and finishes.

"Having been previously quoted two other times from other contractors, not only was Delight Flooring the most reasonable, they were also the most helpful. We had a quote within 30 mins, and were given lots of options on what type of hardwood/laminate we should install. They were on time, great at communicating, and used to dealing with condo's (a bonus for those with strict riles to adhere to). I would 100% recommend Delight Flooring to anyone as they did an amazing job!"

HomeOwner • 28 Sep 2010 • HomeStars"I did my floor and learn that the stairs are not included because it is a different kind of job that needed to be done. I start looking for a person or company that can complete the stairs job in a timely manner and cost efficient. I receive many quotes but Rudy’s quote was details and easy to understand. After reviewing all quotes, I decide to give the job to Rudy. A bit scared of what will come out of it, Rudy reassure me that my house was his show room and I will be please when is done. Let me say I am not please but over please. Rudy was efficient, extremely professional. He respected my time line as I was expecting my kids that weekend. I would highly recommend using this company, they are all the things you could ask for in a contractor; polite, neat, reasonably priced and timely. Thank you so much again Rudy for all your great work!"
