When you step on a tread, it flexes. If there's a gap between the tread and the riser or stringer, the wood rubs together and makes noise. "My project was a little over 1000 sq ft of hardwood flooring, 350 ft of baseboard trim, 350 feet of door stop and 10 sq ft of tile in front of a fireplace.
